Garden from the Ground Up with New Book

Contributed by Seattle Garden Club member Jennifer Wyatt

A little plant science can go a long way to help our gardens grow.  Dr. Linda Chalker-Scott, WSU’s Extension Urban Horticulturist and Associate Professor in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, spoke at a SGC general meeting in October, 2008, delving into the scientific basis for practices such as fertilizing, mulching and root washing prior to transplanting.  Along with 20 of the area’s most respected authorities in the field, Chalker-Scott has just produced a new book titled:

Sustainable Landscapes and Gardens:

good science—practical application

Four years in the making, the book was initially conceived as a text book for the Master Gardener program. The authors’ goal was to provide current, accurate and relevant science behind urban horticulture and arboriculture to a non-academic audience.  Well organized and clearly written with excellent illustrations and photographs, the book touches on a variety of issues and problems that arise in the garden, from proper staking techniques to plant nutrition to diagnosis of plant disease.

This valuable resource is self-published and available only through Chalker-Scott, who served as the book’s editor. More information on the authors and contents of this book and instructions for ordering it are available at:

Priced as a text book, it currently sells for $39 (plus tax and shipping) and will increase to $49 after April 1.

Linda Chalker-Scott has also written The Informed Gardener (2008).  Her web page is http://www.theinformedgardener.com   She contributes to an interesting blog called “The Garden Professors”: https://sharepoint.cahnrs.wsu.edu/blogs/urbanhort/default.aspx
